So if you are like me and wanted to upgrade to WordPress 3.0 automatically…you might encounter this “error”

“Briefly unavailable for Scheduled maintenance. Check back in a minute”

After you upgrade to wordpress 3.0 automatically, you get sent to a window that says “Briefly unavailable for Scheduled maintenance. Check back in a minute”. I first thought it would go away after it finished installing, but it never did.

Here is how to solve the WordPress 3.0 “Briefly unavailable for Scheduled maintenance. Check back in a minute” error:

  1. Step 1: Login to your blog via FTP
  2. Go to your root director where you have your wordpress install
  3. Be sure to “show hidden files”
  4. Delete the file named “.maintenance”
  5. You are good to go!

I recently tried installing Airtight’s SimpleViewer Gallery on one of my client’s sites. I liked it because I could upload the photos to flickr and it will automatically generate thumbnails and add everything to the gallery.

One Problem. SimpleViewer didn’t work at all in FireFox.

Here is how I fixed the SimpleViewer FireFox Bug

How To Make SimpleViewer Work in FireFox

I’m surprised it didn’t work out of the box.

1) Take the Following Script and change the 100% values to a number such as 960 and 600. Firefox needs an actual number, not a relative value. Let me know if this works for you! It worked for me!

<script type=”text/javascript” src=”http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/swfobject/2.2/swfobject.js”></script>
<script type=”text/javascript”>
var flashvars = {};
flashvars.galleryURL = “gallery.xml”;
var params = {};
params.allowfullscreen = true;
params.allowscriptaccess = “always”;
params.bgcolor = “222222″;
swfobject.embedSWF(“simpleviewer.swf”, “flashContent”, “100%“, “100%“, “9.0.124″, false, flashvars, params);
</script>

Today is Twitter’s fourth birthday, and to celebrate the occasion we asked our Twitter followers: “Let us know how Twitter changed your life – add hashtag #thankstwitter4 so we can find your tweet.”

We got thousands of responses — in fact, #thankstwitter4 has become a trending topic. As promised, we did our best to sift through the tweets and find 140 that represent the Twitter zeitgeist as we enter the social network’s fourth year. Below are our selections, split up into categories or sentiments that we noticed were particularly common.

Consider this Twitter’s birthday picture at age four. Is it cute or is it ugly? You decide!

Adding friends to events or pages can be time consuming and cumbersome. Manually selecting your facebook friends takes way too much time.

Add All Your Facebook Friends in 5 EASY STEPS:

1. go to the page’s profile.
2. click suggest to friends.
3. when the suggestion box appears, copy the link at the bottom into your URL.
4. hit return and all your friends should be selected.
5. click send suggestions

javascript:elms=document.getElementById(‘friends’).getElementsByTagName(‘li’);for(var fid in elms){if(typeof elms[fid] === ‘object’){fs.click(elms[fid]);}}

Simply no. However, I did find a little round about way of doing it.

Here is the situation. You are like me and have 2 macs (one that you leave at home and one you bring to travel). Well I just got the new iMac and its so compact I didn’t want to (or had the ability to) plug it in to an ethernet cable. I want to be able to bring my laptop while traveling but still have access to my home computer should I need to read a certain document, file, etc. The problem is that since my iMac is not plugged in via ethernet, I cannot wake it by sending a packet. However, follow the steps below to make it work:

1) set up VPN on your home computer. Click on System Preferences ->sharing.

2) click on remote management and enable. Allow access for the users you wish ( I chose all)

3) click settings and click the settings you want. The most important is control screen with password as this will allow you to actually use it, not just see it.

4) if you are behind a firewall / router, you need to forward the port 5900 to the computer on the network (i.e. 192.168.1.2).

5) you are done setting up the home computer for remote access.

6) on your remote computer in your finder click “go–>connect to server”.

7) type in your actual home ip “if you don’t know it.. search google “what is my ip” and one of those websites will tell you.

8) type vnc://(your-actual-ip-goes-here)

9)log in using your user name u set up on your home computer and viola!

10) now if you are going away for a week and want to use it and wake your home computer on a wireless network, you must do this round about wake up. go into system preferences on your home computer then click energy saver

11) say you are going away for a week. click WAKE FOR NETWORK ACCESSS. then go to schedule. the day you leave, just set your computer to wake up every day at like 8am and go to sleep at like 12pm. This will allow a window for wherever you are to remotely access your computer on a wireless network.

Teleport for Mac allows users to control multiple computers with one keyboard and mouse!

Teleport for Mac allows users to control multiple computers with one keyboard and mouse!

Have multiple mac based computers? Hate using multiple keyboards and mice? I have the solution!

I recently got a new iMac so I can have a dedicated work computer that I can dual-screen Adobe CS4 and increase productivity. Now I’m staring at 3 monitors: my iMac with dual screen and my older MacBook Pro.

After awhile using these computers, I found myself using my laptop keyboard to try and control my iMac and vice versa. Well obviously that doesn’t work.

I recently did a google search to see if there was a cure for my illness. Abyssoft has created a little program that helped me! It’s called Teleport for mac.

This preference pane app allows a user to control multiple macs with one keyboard and mouse! I just installed it so I’m still new to the whole concept, but I must say I can see it increasing my productivity!

Side note: I tried installing it but I kept getting an error saying, “Could not load teleport preference pane.” The solution to this problem (at least for me ) is:

  1. Make sure you have the correct version. Right now there are 2 different versions available. One of them is for older PPC based macs (mine was running Tiger) and one is for newer macs (currently running snowleopard).
  2. Try installing the preferencepane app (the right version) and then restart your computer and try re-installing. That worked for me!

Using Adobe Connect Now For Online Meetings

Using Adobe Connect Now For Online Meetings

Why spend thousands on expensive online meeting software when Adobe provides one for free? That’s why I’m saying! Adobe Connect Now is a great online tool that allows users to host online meetings and share their screen, webcam, files, whiteboard, etc. The best part is it is all FREE! Let’s get started!

Step 1) Go to http://www.adobe.com/acom/connectnow/

Step 2) Sign up

Step 3) You should get a confirmation and a unique web address.. now lets get to the good stuff

When Adobe Connect now loads (after downloading a simple plugin) you will see the default screen. All the “pods” are loaded except the whiteboard which can be opened in the pod menu. Users can modify the layout for their own personal need if they wanted to make certain pods smaller or larger. It is a simple click and drag interface.

Users can share their screen (which requires an additional small plugin) and other users can even request control. This feature is very handy for sharing ideas and allowing contribution.

There is a small chat box if users need to exchange words via text. If you don’t want to type, use the microphone! There is a handy feature that allows users to use it like skype. If you have a webcam, you can even see eachother.

There is also a shared text box. I use this to keep notes and important information that is being collaborated on.

At the end of the meeting, you can save your chat history and notes for the record.

These are just some simple tips and tools that Adobe Connect Now has to offer. Let me know how you use it and if you have any more tips!
Please follow my tweets @ryanscottlum if you like what you see and you will get first had the newest information!

It is about that time where college students become graduates. With graduation around the corner, are you ready to put your best foot forward in your next job interview?

I’m getting a lot of personal website requests from students worrying about getting their name out and making a good impression on their potential employers. Do you have a website that displays your best work and your resume? Well lets step back. Do you even have a resume? If not, I compiled a list of steps to keep up with with the latest tactics in landing your first job!

Step 1: Start with the basics. Create your paper resume. Remember that employers get piles and piles of these darn things, so keep it simple, well-written, and to the point. If you don’t have much to put down yet, don’t add fluff.
Great starting points- vault.com, about.com

Step 2: If you want a professional job, act the part. Get your thoughts organized. I posted a video on productivity. There are many resources on the internet about productivity. Also reading up on articles within your industry helps your keep in that mindset and stay focused. The power of Google!

Step 3: Start creating your online presence and networks. There are so many social networking sites. They are all free. By joining these social networks, you can expand your network and also create a web presence. Join these websites and keep your message consistent.

  • LinkedIn – Social networking for professionals. Expand your network and also allows you to get recommendations from your fellow professionals! Here is a nice article on how to use it!
  • Facebook – Social networking. Stay connected with your friends, family, and people you meet along the way!
  • Flickr – Photo sharing website.
  • Twitter – Share you thoughts in 140 words or less with others you know or just meet!
  • Mashable – Social bookmarking
  • Delicious – Social bookmarking
  • StumbleUpon – Social bookmarking
  • Tumblr – Easy blogging Tumbling!

Look at all the social networks there are!

Step 4: Create a business card. You can create free business cards at vistaprint. I personally would suggest investing in nice business cards once you have a good design in mind. You can also get them done at vistaprint. I’m sure you’ve all seen this video if you have been looking at making a business card.

Step 5: Create a website. Key things to have on your website are: resume, about you, your best work, way of contacting and connecting with you. Be sure to link all the social networks you joined! You can easily make a website yourself using such tools as google sites or weebly.

Step 6: Advertise yourself! Start passing out your business card, start talking up your twitter/social networking sites, start blogging, do whatever you need to do to get your name out there!

Let me know what you think! And be sure to follow my tweets @ryanscottlum
